African-American doctor depicted as gorilla at UCLA
event

A respected African American faculty surgeon filed a racial discrimination suit against
the UCLA Medical Center and UC Regents. Dr. Christian Head has been intentionally
degraded based on his race and UCLA officials have ignored blatant acts of racial
discrimination, including an edited photo depicting Dr. Head as a gorilla being
sodomized by his supervisor. That alone is offensive. But the fact that the photo was
publicly presented for laughs during an annual medical school sponsored event
attended by more than 200 physicians, faculty, residents and guests is both shocking
and indefensible. Hear what Dr. Head has endured and what UCLA officials continue
ignore.

Black UCLA Professor Files Lawsuit After Being
Depicted as Sodomized Gorilla
May 19, 2012
By Kirsten West Savali

Head is the first and only Black tenured professor in UCLA’s Otolaryngology (Head and
Neck) surgery department. His lawsuit specifically names colleagues Dr. Marilene Wang
and Dr. Gerald Burke, accusing them of making inappropriate and racist comments
over the years about Black Americans.

He filed the 40-page complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, reports the
Los Angeles Times, accusing UC Regents of “failing to prevent discrimination,
harassment and retaliation.”

...University spokesman Phil Hampton, claimed that an investigation concluded that
there was no evidence to “substantiate unlawful activity.” He also claims that Head was
told to take his issues to the Academic Senate committee and had declined to do so...

...Chancellor Gene Block said in a statement Tuesday that the university investigated
the claims but was unable to substantiate them...

[Maura Larkins' comment: Hmmm.  A code of silence among doctors?  I imagine
this is not good for patients who have been harmed by doctors.]

Black Surgeon Christian Head Wins $4.5 Million Racial
Discrimination Lawsuit from UCLA Medical School
July 19, 2013
Hinterland Gazette Staff

Former UCLA surgeon Dr. Christian Head won a $4.5 million racial discrimination
lawsuit from UCLA medical school which superimposed his face onto a gorilla which was
being sodomized by a department chairman in a slide show presentation.

Dr. Head filed the lawsuit against the UC Board of Regents in April after claiming he
was publicly humiliated by the portrayal. In the lawsuit, Head accused the university of
failing to prevent discrimination, harassment and retaliation against him. The complaint
alleges that during a resident graduation event in 2006, a slide show was created by
the residents and reviewed by staff, including the photo of his face superimposed onto
a gorilla.

Two UCLA professors were also named in the lawsuit.  Dr. Gerald Berke and Dr.
Marilene Wang were accused of making ‘inappropriate racial comments and
insinuations about blacks’ and Christian Head for years.

Prominent Judge to Get $500K in Police Brutality Claim
The judge claimed he was treated unfairly by UCLA campus police when stopped
By Mateo Melero

David Cunningham, left, alleged he was roughed up by UCLA police during a traffic
stop for a seatbelt violation. He's pictured in this file photo from 2004 when he was
president of the Board of Police Commissioners.

UCLA will pay $500,000 to a prominent judge who claimed campus police officers
roughed him up after pulling him over for a seatbelt violation last year, according to a
joint statement released Friday by UCLA and an attorney for the judge.

The case was settled after Judge David Cunningham III filed a $10 million claim in
February.

He claimed that two campus officers cuffed him and threw him into the back of a squad
car after he had finished his morning workout at a gym in Westwood on Nov. 23, 2013.

The officers acted after he got out of his car to retrieve his car insurance and
registration information and refused orders to get back in his car, the university said.

The incident caused him "serious injury and damages to his mind, body and
reputation," his attorney Carl Douglas contended shortly after the confrontation.

As part of the settlement, Cunningham will receive $150,000 from the university and a
$350,000 scholarship fund in his name.

UCLA police will also be required to train on issues of understanding diversity, bias, and
the use of force, according to a statement from both parties.

A one-day community forum will be held to discuss police and community relations.

Alarming Complaint Against
UC-
San Diego
By RENI ANGUELOVA

SAN DIEGO (CN) - The
University of California at San
Diego fired a multiracial
employee for complaining of her
boss's racially and sexually
offensive behavior, the woman
claims in court.
  Grace Aspiras sued the
University of California and her
former boss, George Hanson,
an academic coordinator, on
Sept. 30 in Superior Court.
  Aspiras, who is of Chinese,
Filipina and Spanish descent,
says she was hired in 2007 as a
program representative in
UCSD's Basic Writing Program.
  "The vast majority of the
students admitted into the Basic
Writing Program are
international students, many of
whom are of Asian descent," she
says in the lawsuit.
  The 14-page complaint claims
that Hanson made a litany of
comments offensive to women
and minorities.
  Among them, according to the
complaint:
that UCSD is "'a whore that
opened its legs to allow
international students to enroll'
and as a 'prostitute that spreads
its legs for international tuition'";
  "that the Asian students who
were dismissed by failing to
satisfy the Entry
  Level Writing Requirement
would all end up 'working at their
parents' noodle shop'";
  "that 'dismissed Korean
students will end up working at
Kia or Hyundai; dismissed
Chinese students will end up
working at Sony; and dismissed
Japanese students will end up
working at Toyota'";
  "that 'Chinese students cheat'
and 'the Chinese are known for
cheating'".
  Finally, Aspiras says, Hanson
wrote a grossly offensive sexual
essay, "purportedly about writing
style," which "served no
educational or instructional
purpose," and "distributed the
essay to every instructor in the
Basic Writing Program."
  The lawsuit claims that
Hanson's essay "contained
direct quotations such as 'a jet
of water in my gaping, swollen
pussy,' 'hanging on to a good
size breast,' '... the use to which,
for years, I put my anus and, as
frequently, if not more so, my
vagina,' 'had a touch of the
clap,' 'I chose to fuck only with
my ass,' 'even fucking can be
boring,' and 'sex is as natural as
breathing.'"
  Aspiras claims that Hanson
circulated "numerous other
essays" of a similar kind, none
of which were necessary for
instruction.
She claims that UCSD failed to
take any disciplinary action
despite her repeated complaints
but retaliated by firing her on
false claims that she helped
students cheat on exams.
  She seeks punitive damages
for sexual harassment, wrongful
firing, gender discrimination,
racial discrimination, negligent
supervision and intentional
infliction of emotional distress.
  She is represented by Frank
Polek.
