Longtime Hayward educator, union head dies at 66

HAYWARD — Hayward Education Association President Kathleen Crummey, a lifelong Hayward resident and tireless
advocate for teachers, succumbed to a one-year battle with lung cancer Friday. She was 66.
"Her dedication to the teaching profession was boundless and an inspiration," said husband Dayton Crummey. "Union
work was definitely in her blood."
Kathleen Crummey was raised in a household of educators and teachers union advocates on Main Street in downtown
Hayward, where she continued to live until she passed.
A product of Hayward schools and a 1960 graduate of Hayward High, Crummey returned to the district as a teacher
after earning her teaching credential from then Cal State Hayward in 1971.
She spent three decades dedicated to elementary school students at Palma Ceia, Cherryland, Laurel and Strobridge
schools before becoming HEA president in July 2001.
"Kathy touched the lives of thousands of students and teachers," said Donna Goldenstein, a teacher at Lorin Eden
Elementary, and a longtime colleague and friend. "Not only was she an extraordinary teacher herself, she was an
unwavering advocate for the success of the students and teachers in Hayward. She was warm and compassionate, yet
strong in her resolve to create the best learning environment for all."
That strong resolve led Hayward teachers on a 10-day strike in April 2007. As a result, teachers were able to negotiate
11 percent salary increases over two years with

the Hayward school district.
Most recently, in January of this year, Crummey galvanized teachers, students and parents at a rally at Birchfield Park
against cuts sought by the state and district.
Crummey is survived by her husband, Dayton Crummey, of Hayward; sister Anne Handel, of Shasta County; daughter
Jennifer Kenyon, of Hayward; grandchildren Tessa and Taylor Kenyon, of Hayward; and stepdaughters Kristen Burke,
of Santa Maria, and Kari Rose, of Round Mountain.
Services will be private, but the family will hold a public memorial in the fall. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that
donations be made in the name of Kathleen Crummey to the Hayward Education Foundation, 22561 Main St., Hayward,

Teacher, labor leader Kathleen Crummey dies
Nanette Asimov, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, August 6, 2009
Labor leader Kathleen Crummey, tenacious president of the Hayward Education Association, has died of lung cancer.
She was 66.
A fifth-generation Californian and native of Hayward, Ms. Crummey was an elementary school teacher who devoted
her life to improving the welfare not only of the children she taught but also of the teachers she worked with.
Ms. Crummey proved her tenacity in April 2007, when she led Hayward teachers - then among the lowest paid
instructors in Alameda County - through a 22-day strike for higher pay.
Hayward school district officials offered a 7 percent raise, but Ms. Crummey wanted 16 percent - the same given to
administrators.
When the district sweetened its proposal only slightly, Ms. Crummey called the offer "an insult."
Working 12-hour days, often with a bullhorn to her lips, Ms. Crummey invited hundreds of students, parents and
teachers on pro-labor marches through Hayward and to noisy rallies in the city's Birchfield Park.
In the end, the union won an 11 percent raise for Hayward's 1,300 teachers.
"She was a force to be reckoned with," said Mercedes Faraj, vice president of the union. "I was really inspired by her
leadership and compassion. She was a caring teacher, union leader and friend."
Born Kathleen Kenyon on June 23, 1943, Ms. Crummey grew up in a family of teachers and union leaders on Main
Street in Hayward. She attended Strobridge Elementary, where she would later teach.
Teaching was in her blood. She went to work for Hayward schools in 1970 and married Hayward high school teacher
Dayton Crummey - who also served two terms as union president, and was active in the statewide California Teachers
Association.
"She was firm, but there was always the friendly side," said Dayton Crummey, noting that her friends included the
school board members and administrators she battled at the bargaining table.
Ms. Crummey was diagnosed with lung cancer last September. Four months later, she led another raucous rally to
protest deep cuts to education. Even while hospitalized this spring, Ms. Crummey continued her union work, even
counseling colleagues worried about layoffs.
She died July 24 in the Main Street home her parents built in the 1930s, where she was born and where she lived with
her family.
In addition to her husband, Ms. Crummey is survived by her sister, Anne Handel of Anderson (Shasta County);
daughter Jennifer Kenyon of Hayward; stepdaughters Kristen Burke of Santa Maria (Santa Barbara County) and Kari
Rose of Round Mountain (Shasta County); two granddaughters; and a grandson.

The Del Mar Schools Teachers Union:
CTA comments
The message on the Web site of the Del Mar California Teachers'
Association echoes Rodriguez's comments.
"Each member of this board takes his or her responsibility very seriously,"
the DMCTA message reads. "It is our desire that we ensure a smooth
transition for a new superintendent. We truly believe that threats of
retribution and litigation do very little to unify our community. The board
has had to make a very difficult decision. Each board member agonized
over making the decision, but it has been made, and now we are moving
forward as a united board that is committed to providing a rigorous,
inspiring and nurturing educational program for all our students."
[Maura Larkins comment: the process should be transparent,
especially if the superintendent is willing to have it discussed. And
CTA saying that threats of retribution and litigation do very little”?
Pure hypocrisy. CTA’s head counsel Beverly Tucker asked several
California district attorneys, including San Diego’s Bonnie Dumanis, to
prosecute teachers for sending emails opposing CTA. CTA is
constantly suing school districts when politically-connected teachers
are fired. And Stutz law firm is even worse. They went after the City
of Chula Vista for firing Laurie Madigan, who had stayed home from
work because she was afraid she might get sick due to the stress of
an investigation of her actions. And then they went after Tri-City
Hospital for firing Art Gonzales and pals.]
