Robert L. Modlin, M.D. completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University,
received his medical degree at the New York University School of Medicine, was a pediatrics
intern at NYU, and a dermatology resident at Los Angeles County/University of Southern
California School of Medicine. Dr. Modlin’s primary research mentor is Barry R. Bloom, although
the training has been unofficial, it began in 1983 by telephone and fedex, then continued by fax
and email. Since 1990, Dr. Modlin has been at UCLA, presently as the Klein Professor of
Dermatology, Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, Chief of the
Division of Dermatology and Vice Chair for cutaneous medicine and dermatologic research in
the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Modlin’s interest in leprosy began during his dermatology residency at the Los Angeles
County/University of Southern California Medical Center, learning from Dr. Thomas Rea. The goal
of his research is centered on the study of leprosy as a model to learn about mechanisms of
host defense in humans. As such, Dr. Modlin’s laboratory has made fundamental insights into T
cell subsets, cytokine patterns, antigen presentation, innate immunity and antimicrobial
mechanisms in the human immune response to infection. He has been awarded three patents
for this research. Dr. Modlin has published over 180 articles, including 13 papers in Science and
Nature, and 4 in Nature Medicine. The Modlin lab’s manuscript identifying distinct T cell cytokine
profiles in leprosy lesions has been cited over 1000 times. An exciting recent discovery is the
elucidation of the mechanism by which vitamin D subsets contributes to innate immunity against
tuberculosis in humans, providing a rationale for therapeutic intervention. Dr. Modlin received the
Montagna Award for outstanding young investigator from the Society for Investigative Dermatology
and has given the Sulzberger lectureship of the American Academy of Dermatology. He received
a merit award from the National Institutes of Health for his research on Toll-like receptors. Dr.
Modlin is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the American
Association of Physicians. He has served as Deputy Editor for the Journal of Immunology, as
well as being a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Infection
and Immunity and Immunology. Dr. Modlin has served on the Society for Investigative
Dermatology Board of Directors.

It's interesting that the previous
reviewer mentioned Dr. Ki-Young
Suh.  This is the doctor that told me
(after meeting me for like 2 mins.
and me telling her that I had OCD)
that I needed a shrink.  I actually tried
to report her to UCLA for
inappropriate behaviour, but alas,
she had already quit.

I did get hooked up a second time
with a much better doctor.  Dr.
Jonathan Cotliar.  He was a good
listener, friendly and didn't make me
feel like crap like Dr. Suh had.
They take my insurance (Anthem)
and the appointment desk is
courteous and helpful.
If it weren't for my horrible experience
with Dr. Suh, i would have given it 3
stars.

I took my 11 month old daughter to
see Dr. Ki-Young Suh after
searching for a reputable pediatric
dermatologist and I was happy that I
found her. She was a great listener,
intelligent, and informative. And there
was no wait, so that's a huge plus.
I'm glad I found her!

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a one-year accredited
fellowship that provides intensive training in all aspects of dermatopathology in order to
prepare trainees for an academic or community career in the field.  Fellows trained in
dermatology will participate in an ACGME-approved combination of dermatopathology
and pathology with an emphasis on those fields most relevant to dermatopathology.
Fellows trained in pathology will work within the dermatopathology service as well as the
clinical services of UCLA's prestigious Dermatology Department.  All Fellows are
provided with the highest level of dermatopathology training, including daily sign-out of
many extremely challenging consult cases as well as a high volume of routine cases
from community dermatologists and the inpatient services of UCLA Medical Center.

A broad range of ancillary studies including immunohistochemistry and molecular
pathology are routinely employed by the service.  Extensive opportunities for basic
science, translational, and clinical research are available including collaborations with
UCLA professors studying a wide range of clinical and basic science disciplines.
Educational opportunities are limitless.  Three fellowship positions are currently
available.

I would give him no stars,
worst dermatologist I have
ever been to and I've seen
many. Do not believe the 5
stars, they must be from
friends and relatives. If he
spent 5 minutes with me it
was a lot and he didn't
even examine me. I told him
I have psoriasis and he
immediately prescribed
Humera and told me one of
his staff would be in touch
to let me know if my
insurance covered it.
Needless to say I never got
a call and had to call
numerous times to find out.
When I finally was told it
wasn't covered, I asked
what other treatment would
they suggest and was told
a lot of prescribed
medications were
expensive and might not be
covered either, but made
no effort to find out. The
worst Doctor ever. He might
be brilliant but he should be
in a lab and and not seeing
patients. If you call 5
minutes seeing them.
Shame on him.

I like Dr. Ho very much. Just
saw him today. I have a lot
of skin cancer in my family
so I see him about every 6
months. Every time is a
great experience. He'll even
make a deal with you and
burn off skin tags that the
insurance won't cover. I'm
sorry 3 other people had a
bad experience. my
husband goes to him as
well as three of our friends.
Always been great. We
certainly have no vested
interest in him

He is very fast, and quite
brilliant, efficient,
responsive, rational and
caring.

I have had many skin
doctors over the years, and
this is the only one that I
trust. He's a small legend in
Little Tokyo with a very
good reputation.

On one occassion, after
being misdiagnosed with a
potentially terminal disease
by a locak qwack (not hard
to figure out who this is in
J-town), Dr. Ho easily
explained why I did not
have this disease, which
tests a few days later
confirmed.

My only minor complaint is
that there was one person
working here who was
always in an eternal bad
mood and kind of rude. So
much so that I avoided
calling for fear of getting
her on the phone. Sorry.
Not a reason to knock
points off the doctor but
etiquette is so very
important.

Other than that, likely the
best doctor I have ever
visited, in any profession.
Also, prices are very
reasonable and excellent
results for my skin. And no,
I am not a relative lol!

As you can see from my
other reviews, it is not often
that I give 5 to anyone, for
anything.

I'm very disappointed with
Dr. Ho.
I came in with a few
whiteheads on my face and
a couple zits, he prescribed
me Retin A 0.025% without
telling me any side effect
and what I will be going
through. Before I started
the treatment, I looked up
the treatment online and
saw what people said about
it. Hundreds of reviews I
read said the same thing,
your skin will irritate and will
go through horrible initial
breakouts and that Doctors
mostly prescribe oral
antibiotics for patients who
are on this treatment. I was
really concerned so I made
another appointment with
Dr. Ho, and he just told me
that the percentage he
prescribed me will not
irritate my skin and I will not
go through initial breakout.
I asked him firmly more
than once and he promised
me that I will not have
irritation as long I use
moisturizer and would not
go through initial breakout.
He only spoke to me for 10
min and did not prescribe
anything else with the
treatment and rushed me
out.
I'm quite upset that I had to
pay $35 to talk to him for
10 min and got nothing out
of it.
And guess what? After 15
days on the treatment, my
skin is starting to irritate
and I am going through the
initial breakout. Just like
every review online said I
would go through. I now
have 6 cystic acnes on my
face. I'm upset but I know
what to expect from the
Retin A 0.025% treatment,
not from my doctor, but
from the reviews I read
online.
As an expierenced
Dermatologist, Dr. Ho
should know better. I am
very disappointed at him.

11/2/2010 I am sorry to
hear this; however, I don't
usually give out Retin A
.025% cream and I usually
prescribe Retin A .04%
Micro which is less
irritating.  Perhaps your
pharmacy switched it to the
generic form which usually
irritates and exacerbates
your acne. Sometimes
pharmacist will tell you that
it is the same medication,
but it is obviously not.

Dr. Ho is great. And his

First to Review

I am someone who rarely goes to
the dermatologist (hadn't been in
more than 5 years), nor do I have
any serious skin conditions. I
went only to have some minor
sun damage (sunspots)
inspected. This was a great,
no-nonsense visit to the
dermatologist. The front office
staff were friendly and efficient. I
waited no more than 5 minutes
for my appointment. While I was
in the waiting room, Dr. Ho came
out to the front desk and took a
phone call from a patient (always
a good sign when a doctor
actually talks to patients). Dr. Ho
is friendly and knowledgeable. He
gives you straightforward
information without sugarcoating
or trying to sell you
procedures/products that are
unnecessary. He has a sense of
humor. I will definitely make him
my choice for any future
dermatologist visits. If only my
family doctor was this good......

My doctor referred me to
Dr. Ho to have my moles
examined. I had a bad
experience with another
dermatologist who ordered
unnecessary tests and did
unnecessary procedures.
Dr. Ho was thorough,
honest and pleasant and
ruled out the necessity of
further mole removal which
the other doctor had
recommended. He's great.

Dr. Ho is wonderful - he's
very professional, helpful,

him for a mole examination
about 8 years ago.  Since
then, he has been my
dermatologist and now, my
family members also see
him whenever they have
skin problems.  His office is
always busy but he takes
some time to answer all of
the questions - he truly
cares for his patients.

His counsel/talking manner
is very rude and short less
than 10 minutes. Basically,
he could not treat or even
prescribe instead of saying
that you should come
earlier. You cannot expect
professinal mannered
knowledgable treatment
from him. I just felt wasted
my time and money plus felt
bad all day because of his
attitude.

8/10/2012 I'm sorry you feel
this way; however, I do not
provide treatments that will
not help you nor prescribe
medication that is not
effective.

[Maura Larkins comment:
Seriously, Dr. Ho?  You
never prescribed a
medication that was not
effective?

So, you never CHANGED
anyone's medication
because the first thing you
prescribed didn't work?

That's incredible.

I'm pretty sure you're the
only doctor on the planet
who has such a record.
Except, of course, for the
beginning doctors who
have had no difficult cases
so far.  I suppose they
could also make the claim
you have made.

Obviously, skin conditions
can be unpredictable, and
different causes can result
in similar appearance of the
skin.  And some conditions
simply don't respond to
current medications.  So I'm
wondering how you
manage to be so lucky.  Is
it magic?]

I really lucked out when my
doctor referred me to Dr.
Ho.  In the few minutes I
waited, I heard them speak
3 different languages,
which was nice.  I waited no
more than a minute in the
patient room until Dr. Ho
came in.  Though my family
doctor had wasted 2 visits
misdiagnosing my dry skin
problem, Dr. Ho diagnosed
it in 3 seconds.  My time
with him was brief, but he
answered all the questions I
had quickly and thoroughly
and was very friendly.  You
really can't ask for more.
