Spring Conference had something for everyone
Trainings and W.H.O. Awards highlight the weekend
Accreditation and union merger updates were among the hot topics at
CCA's Spring Conference, which also featured professional development
trainings, the annual W.H.O. (We Honor Ours) awards, a new class of
emerging leaders, and, oh yes, a flamenco performance by Arleen
Hurtado, a part-time instructor at Coast College.
"We are so pleased that our conferences have grown in participants, in
content and in importance to our members," said CCA President Ron
Norton Reel. "It just tells me that our faculty see value in the trainings and
programs we offer through our three yearly conferences."
Officers re-elected
New board members were also elected at the Spring Conference at
the Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa.
Current officers,
President Ron Norton Reel,
Vice President Lynette Nyaggah,
Secretary David Milroy and
Treasurer Jim Weir
were re-elected to final two-year terms by acclamation from the floor.
Also elected by acclamation were directors for District D Brad Reynolds,
District E Michael Smith, District F John Fincher, and District J Paula
Jacobs. Linda Borla was re-elected as District I director, and Debra
Blanchard was elected Women's Director, replacing Wilhelmina Anthony, a
Bakersfield College counselor who has served on the board as Women's
Director and Ethnic/Racial Minority Director.
Sessions ranging from bargaining team training, to Weingarten Rights, to
establishing a chapter budget provided with chapter leaders the chance to
not only learn from experts, but to exchange information with one another.
Another break out session at the conference was an update to the
discussion concerning merging CCA with the Community College Council,
the higher education affiliate of the California Federation of Teachers/AFT.
Members of both statewide organizations shared information regarding the
talks that have taken place thus far. The next scheduled discussion group
meeting will take place this June. Representatives from NEA, CTA, CCA,
AFT, CFT, and CCC are participating. This group represents both
governance and staff.
Academy's fourth class
CCA's successful Building Strong Leaders Academy, designed to train and
empower new leadership, also launched its fourth class at the spring
conference. The 15 chapter leaders selected will undergo intensive
training as the spring, fall and winter conferences. Following graduation at
the winter conference, it is hoped that participants will go back to their
chapters with skills that will help strengthen their locals.
Other local chapter leaders were honored Saturday evening during the
W.H.O. Awards banquet in a ceremony emceed by motivational speaker
Tanya Brown.
